FAQs
1. What year levels do you tutor?
We specialise in senior secondary students, mainly:
Year 10 (preparing for VCE)
VCE Units 1–4 (Years 11–12)
If you’re unsure whether your child is the right fit, feel free to get in touch and we can chat about their needs.
2. What subjects do you offer?
We focus on senior academic skills, for example:
[e.g. VCE English / EAL / Literature]
[e.g. Study skills, essay writing, exam skills]
You can find my current subject list on the Subjects Page, or contact me if you have a specific subject in mind.
3. Are sessions online or in-person?
I currently offer:
[Online sessions] via [platform, e.g. Zoom/Teams], and/or
[In-person sessions] in the [your area/suburb] area.
You’re welcome to choose the option that works best for your family.
(You can also change from in-person to online if circumstances change.)
4. How long is each session?
Most sessions are 60 minutes.
For some students, particularly around exams or SACs, we may discuss longer sessions (e.g. 90 or 120 minutes) where appropriate.
5. How much do you charge?
My fees reflect:
My experience as a classroom teacher, and
The time spent on planning, resource creation and marking, not just the live lesson.
Current fees are listed on the Pricing Page.
If you’re unsure which option is best for your child, please get in touch and I can talk you through it.
6. How do payments work?
Payment is made [before each session / weekly / fortnightly in advance] via [bank transfer / card / other method].
Invoices/receipts can be provided on request.
Details are explained clearly on the Pricing Page and when you first book.
7. What is your cancellation policy?
To be fair to everyone:
More than 24 hours’ notice:
You can cancel or reschedule with no charge.
Less than 24 hours’ notice or no-show:
A 15% fee may be charged, as that time has been set aside for your child.
If we ever need to cancel, I’ll give as much notice as possible and offer a rescheduled time or a credit for that session.
8. How do you support students with learning difficulties or additional needs?
We aim to be inclusive and supportive of diverse learning needs.
We encourage parents to share any diagnosed learning needs, school adjustments or strategies that work well.
We adapt my teaching style, pacing and materials where possible to support your child.
If we believe a student would benefit from additional or specialist support (e.g. educational psychologist, speech therapist, etc.), I’ll discuss this with you.
We do not provide medical or therapeutic services, but I work alongside these supports where appropriate.
9. Will you do my child’s homework or SACs for them?
No. My goal is to help students understand and improve, not to complete work for them.
I will happily:
Help unpack questions and criteria
Model how to plan and structure responses
Give feedback on drafts and practice questions
But students must submit their own work, in line with school academic integrity policies.
10. Can you guarantee a certain grade or ATAR?
No tutor can guarantee specific marks, grades or ATARs, and we want to be honest about that.
What we can offer is:
Clear teaching of the skills needed in senior years
VCE-style practice tasks and feedback
Guidance around study routines and exam preparation
Progress depends on many factors: attendance, effort, completion of practice tasks, school environment and more. We focus on building strong skills, good habits and confidence, which usually leads to better results over time.
11. What does a typical session look like?
A typical session might include:
Check-in – how the week has been, upcoming SACs/assessments.
Targeted teaching – unpacking a concept, skill or text that needs work.
Guided practice – working through VCE-style questions or tasks together.
Independent practice – the student attempts a task with support as needed.
Feedback & next steps – what went well, what to work on, and any suggested homework or revision.
Sessions are structured, but there’s always room to respond to what’s happening at school that week.
12. How do you keep parents informed?
For students under 18, we can:
Provide occasional updates on strengths, challenges and progress (e.g. via email).
Let you know if we are concerned about engagement, workload or wellbeing.
Suggest practical next steps at home (e.g. planning study time before SACs).
If you prefer more or fewer updates, just tell us your preference and we will do my best to accommodate it.
13. How do you handle child safety?
We are committed to providing a safe, respectful learning environment.
In-person sessions should be held in a visible, shared space (e.g. living room, library), not a closed bedroom.
For online sessions, we ask that an adult is in the home and contactable.
If we ever have serious concerns about a student’s safety or wellbeing, we will follow appropriate professional and legal obligations.
14. What should my child bring to sessions?
For the best use of our time, students should bring:
Their school texts / novels / resources
Recent SACs, tests or assignments (if available)
Their teacher’s rubrics or criteria sheets, if provided
A notebook, pen, and any relevant digital device
For online sessions, they’ll also need a reliable internet connection and access to any shared documents we’re using.
15. How do we get started?
Contact us via [email / phone / enquiry form].
We’ll briefly discuss your child’s needs, goals and current subjects.
If we’re a good fit, we’ll arrange a first session and talk through any questions about pricing, timing and expectations.
You’re very welcome to ask anything that isn’t covered here – I’m happy to clarify before you commit.
